The geography of Grancelona
“Barcelona is one of the most beautiful cities in the world and, above all, it is my city. The vitality with which the city adopts me is mutual. Its light, so similar to that of Valencia, gives me warmth and its topography fascinates me. I travel the streets on a scooter and draw the city with a pen, graphically capturing the layout of streets and avenues that, as if they were a scalpel, cut the map and order it.”
The exhibition that you can visit in the Escoleta building from March 11 to April 24 shows a current Barcelona, which is already very large: Grancelona . A city that integrates into its urban fabric areas that have been less visible until now, but are fundamental to understanding its role and energy.
In the nave you will find a large-format charcoal and marker drawing, made specifically for the space, where his illustrations extend beyond the paper; along with other drawings made over the years from different perspectives of Barcelona. The set of Mariscal ‘s works reveals a city so energetic and vital that he has no choice but to draw it again.
Artist
Javier Mariscal
Valencia, 1950
Javier Mariscal is a graphic designer, illustrator, furniture and interior designer, painter and sculptor: an irreverent artist guided by freedom and drawing as an essential language. Linked to the Movida and the renewal of Spanish comics with Los Garriris , he achieved international recognition with the creation of Cobi for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. In 1989 he founded Estudio Mariscal, one of the first multidisciplinary studios in Spain.
Since 1988, his career has been closely linked to Palo Alto , a space that has been his workshop, creative laboratory and meeting point. Here he has consolidated his studio and developed many of the projects that have marked his international projection, such as Cobi , conceived on the ground floor of building E, today covered by a large bougainvillea.
National Design Award winner and honorary member of the Royal Design Industry , he has developed identity, product and interior design projects for brands and institutions around the world. His work has been exhibited in centers such as the Centre Pompidou , the Victoria & Albert Museum or the Vitra Design Museum , and is part of important public and private collections.
In the film industry, he expanded his creative universe with the co-direction, together with Fernando Trueba, of the animated films Chico y Rita and Dispararon al pianista , consolidating a versatile career with international projection.
